'Julie's Components of Effective Writing

The following is a list of components that are critical to the teaching of writing:

'Student Centered Writing

Effective writing must be student centered. Students must be allowed a choice about what to write, drawing from their own interests and experiences. For writing to be done well it should have a personal connection for the writer. These topics may very well be a part of their own lives and experiences. When kids write about things that really matter to them they write with interest. Personal narratives also seem to be easier to write than unrelated assigned topics.

Cooperative Learning:

Cooperative learning – discussion groups, peer editing Discussions build confidence and ideas. Students should be taught to discuss their work with friends or to work cooperatively in small groups. Through cooperative learning methods different viewpoints, family or cultural experiences are easily presented as well.

Modeling:

We need to model writing to our students just like we model everything else. We need to write frequently so that we can appreciate the difficulties our students face and so that we may come up with fresh ideas for writing based on trial and error. - Julie Johnson
